Friends of Cleveland Park is a Texas nonprofit founded in 2025

Cleveland 125 is a seven-year plan launched in 2025 to prepare for Cleveland Park's Quasquicentennial Celebration. Sadly, Funding for Neighborhood Parks in Houston is scarce.  Our goal is to engage our neighborhood and seek funding through memberships, grants, private donor sponsors, and foundations. Donations are tax-deductible. Our park is beautiful; it's big compared to other neighborhoods, it's busy, and it's beloved. It desperately needs a makeover and a master plan.    We are proud to have been a part of every improvement you've seen in the park since the court resurfacing and pickleball addition in December 2023. We welcomed a Houston Mayor for the third time in the Park's history in April 2025, and we're proud to be mentioned as one of the cleanest neighborhood parks in the City of Houston.  Please join us on this journey.

    RESIDENT COOPER HAWK

    YELLOW CROWNED NIGHT HERON

Parker, the Coopers Hawk, was the star of the BBP Walking Tours Up on the High Power Line over the Bayou in BBP. He visits Cleveland Park frequently on his way to Bayou Park, where he knows large numbers of fat finches are roosting in the bushes  near buildings 19/20/23. He is fat, happy, and beautiful.

    YELLOW CROWNED NIGHT HERON

The Bluebonnet Fields in Cleveland Park were seeded in 2022 by two great HPARD stars we met at the Earth Day Celebration Downtown. They increased the size of the bluebonnet tenfold, and we are grateful. They were at their best in 2023 and great in 2024 , but smaller in 2025 due to weather and heat. We have one of the best spots inside the loop.  Please tag us in your photos and do your best to not trample them during season.

    Thanks HPARD.

    Thank You Lady Bird Johnson

    YELLOW CROWNED NIGHT HERON

    YELLOW CROWNED NIGHT HERON

In 2025, we had record numbers of the yellow-crowned night heron (Nyctanassa violacea) in Cleveland Park. They are the Houston Audubon's Official Bird of Houston, known for their distinctive appearance and preference for crustaceans.

Despite their name, they forage during both the day and night, especially during low tide in coastal areas.

They are generally more solitary than other heron species, though they may nest in loose colonies with other herons or solely with their species.

Breeding season typically runs from early spring to mid-summer, depending on the emergence of crabs in the spring.

They are monogamous, with both parents building the nest and raising the young.

Nests are built from sticks, often lined with leaves or other materials, in trees or other vegetation near or over water. Clutches

usually contain 2-6 eggs, which hatch after an incubation period of 24–29 days.

Chicks are helpless and rely on their parents for food for several weeks after hatching.

    SOUTHERN CATALPA

🌳 The Park is Home to the #5 Ranked Southern Catalpa in the County! 🌳

    PARK FALCON

This guy is seen in the Park and at Bayou Park frequently.  Probably not a good idea to leave your pet bird on the patio all day while you are at work because this Falcon wants him for dinner.

    TEXAS BULLFROG

I will never forget the last days of Harvey when the rain finally stopped. The Texas Bullfrogs must have had enough too, because they were screaming so loud you could barely sleep. We relocated three loud ones to new homes near the bridge.

Many of us have seen the Coyotes in the park over the years. A big family lives across the bridge in BBP past the big trees on left. They are fat and happy and usually spotted with a bunny in their mouth.

I've seen a fox in the park, and other wildlife.

    Committee's : PUBLIC ART

    Cleveland Park Public Art Committee

I'm a giant fan of public art in parks. Maybe it's my years living on Canyon Road above Meyer Gallery, maybe it's that Randa Road Trip  to NOLA's Sculpture Garden, but one thing is certain.

We have a beautiful park that needs a signature piece like the one on the right headed to Mason Park. It'a a $20 Million win for HPARD, for Houston, and for Mason Park.

I know the committee we are sending invites to this month to join us has the contacts to help us add something amazing. Even a loaner piece would be great for now.

-The Committee's Charge for the esteemed group is simple-

"Land something amazing and work to get it funded."

Our Mayor was wowed by the hill overlooking the city in the park a few months back. We do have the perfect spot. We have some amazing artists and Gallery Owners on the invite list, and hope they will accept and join us

    • “Public art in parks isn’t just about adding color; it’s about transforming spaces into dynamic, living canvases that inspire creativity and spark connection. These artistic installations turn ordinary parks into vibrant cultural hubs, where people of all ages come together to engage, reflect, and celebrate local identity. Imagine strolling through a park where every sculpture, mural, or installation tells a story, connects you to nature, and encourages conversations. It’s not just visually stunning—it’s an experience that boosts mental well-being, fosters community pride, and makes every visit to the park feel like an adventure. Public art truly transforms our parks into places of imagination, inspiration, and unforgettable moments.”

Congrats on this big SCORE HPARD & Mason Park!

I'll be the first in line the day it opens.

    Trees are coming

We are happy to have sold out our Phase One plan for thirty trees. We are grateful for Trees for Houston and were excited when Barry Ward was out to talk about their program.

Trees are what can bring an unengaged neighborhood together. Nine days after Trees for Houston told us they could do 30 Trees for $5K, we had sold out the first 30 trees. Donors were not only from Magnolia Grove, but also West End and Rice Military, and an equal number of homeowners and renters stepped up for our park's future canopy.  Thanks you neighbors -we're not moving to phase ii called "PLANT DAY PARTNERS"
